Within the Federation, the intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all, and that will maximise the outcomes for every child, so that they know more, remember more and understand more. PSHE is embedded in all that we do to enable our children to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society. Our PSHE curriculum has been built with the aim to support the development of the ‘whole child’, by helping them to understand how they are developing personally and socially as well as promoting their social, mental and physical development. Children will be able to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Through our discreet lessons as well as wider cross curricular approach to teaching PSHE, children are taught how to keep themselves safe, physically and emotionally resulting in the acquisition of knowledge and skills, which enables children to access the wider curriculum. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
At Peak Dale School we plan for PSHE using guidance from the PSHE Association. We start start teaching our children about topics within PSHE in the Early Years, this is planned from the Development Matters guidance. At Dove Holes and Taddington Primary Schools we plan using a scheme called Heart Smart.
Each term we have an overarching subject that we use to cover all aspects of PSHE. Our planning helps to support our curriculum intent. We intend to empower our children by educating them about PSHE and giving them the information they need to make informed choices throughout each stage of their lives.
At Peak Dale During the autumn term children will learn about ‘Relationships‘, during the spring term we learn through the topic of ‘Living in the Wider World‘ and during the summer term we learn through the topic of ‘Health and Well being‘.
All schools within the Federation use resources as recommended by the PSHE Association resources from Yasmin and Tom support the teaching of Sex Education (Overview Yasmin and Tom Lesson Coverage). Parents will always be informed of any sex education lessons that are taking place. We implement our PSHE curriculum throughout everything we do within the Federation, we also teach PSHE at least once per week as an explicit lesson. Many of our assemblies are based around a PSHE theme. Outside agencies, through a carefully mapped planning system, are invited into school to support the implementation of our teaching programme.
At Taddington and Dove Holes Primary Schools Our RHE scheme of work is centred around the Heartsmart scheme which is taught in five thematic units, which consist of seven lessons, each with supporting materials. These thematic units are taught to each year group each year .This enables children to recall and build upon previous learning, exploring the underlying principles of RSE education regularly at a depth that is appropriate for the age and stage of the child. Alongside Heartsmart each year group will take part in the NSPCC Speak up Stay Safe UK programme. This is a comprehensive safeguarding programme delivered to all pupils in school from year 1. It is delivered annually, giving pupils very simple but effective strategies to deal with all forms of child abuse. It also includes an in-depth e-safety section. Resources are also provided to communicate with parents and carers about how and why each theme is covered . Heartsmart units are designed to be delivered in a creative manner, using many approaches such as role play, discussion and games with groups of various sizes. These activities enable children to build confidence and resilience. NSPCC sessions are taught with the use of a puppet using circle time and a variety of games. Citizenship, Protected Characteristics and 'Britishness' is taught by weekly class assemblies based around the Picture News resources. As church schools, we apply the schools Christian Values to discuss and evaluate our own responses to the real-world news and events. Each year group will also be taught two Twinkl units each term focusing on economic awareness , Britishness and living in the wider world.
Within the Federation, our spiralling PSHE curriculum and wider provision will ensure that children will be equipped to support their decision making in regards to their wellbeing, health and relationships. Our embedded whole school vision to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development supports them to foster good relationships between all in line with the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Our spiralling curriculum allows children to build upon their understanding of British Values and Protected Characteristics in an age appropriate way, in order for them to become positive citizens in a forever changing community and ultimately preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. By the end of each key stage, children will have had the opportunities to meet the end of key stage statements in line with the statutory guidance outlined in the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education.

Knowledge and skills- These documents outline how children make progress across the school outlining the knowledge and skills we expect a typical child to demonstrate at the end of each year. Knowledge and skills are organised so that year on year, children revisit and build upon previously taught concepts and skills. This will ensure that children are able to progress and remember key concepts by the time they leave our schools.

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. All schools should teach PSHE, drawing on good practice, and this expectation is outlined in the introduction to the proposed new national curriculum.
PSHE is a non-statutory subject. To allow teachers the flexibility to deliver high-quality PSHE we consider it unnecessary to provide new standardised frameworks or programmes of study. PSHE can encompass many areas of study.
Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. We are clear that parents and carers are the prime educators for children on many of these matters.At Taddington and Priestcliffe and Dove Holes Primary School, we want the subjects to put in place the key building blocks of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online. This will sit alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy.
Teaching about mental wellbeing is central to these subjects, especially as a priority for parents is their children’s happiness. We know that children and young people are increasingly experiencing challenges, and that young people are at particular risk of feeling lonely. The new subject content will give them the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise. All of this content should support the wider work of schools in helping to foster pupil wellbeing and develop resilience and character that we know are fundamental to pupils being happy, successful and productive members of society. Central to this is pupils’ ability to believe that they can achieve goals, both academic and personal; to stick to tasks that will help them achieve those goals, even when the reward may be distant or uncertain; and to recover from knocks and challenging periods in their lives. This should be complemented by development of personal attributes including kindness, integrity, generosity, and honesty values, attributes and dispositions so firmly embedded in our EPIC curriculum drivers and our distinctly Christian ethos and vision as a church school.
We have endeavoured to ensure the content is proportionate and deliverable. We want to support the high quality teaching of these areas as part of a comprehensive programme, which complements the national curriculum where appropriate and meets the ambitions of the Careers Strategy. We have chosen to teach the compulsory content within a wider programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education . Building on established, high quality outcomes we use a scheme of learning called HeartSmart.
The scheme represent a huge opportunity to help our children and young people develop. The knowledge and attributes gained will support their own, and others’, wellbeing and attainment and help young people to become successful and happy adults who make a meaningful contribution to society.
